Mobile Designer at 37signals

1 year ago Design & Art Middle, Senior Full-Time

37signals is hiring a Senior Product Designer for our Mobile team (iOS and Android).

About You

  • You'll work on heavily-used products that push the industry forward. We believe the best designs come from someone who can see it all through, from ideas to visuals to the finished product. You'll work on the whole product, not just small parts of the product.
  • As a manager of one, you’ll drive shaped projects, big and small, over six-week cycles. You’ll set direction, take ownership, make calls, and see things through without a lot of oversight. You’ll be able to communicate clearly with your colleagues, work across teams, and lend a helping hand when needed.
  • You approach your work with a spirit of partnership and collaboration, not exclusion or rigidness. You're a resourceful problem solver; you can feel for gaps in what you're working on, pitch solutions and implement them.
  • 37signals is a remote company and this is a remote job. For this role, we're only hiring from time zones within North or South America, Europe, or Africa.
  • Since we're a remote company, the bulk of our work is written, whether in long form posts or short chats. We value good writers. We also value people who can take a stand yet commit when they disagree. We subject ideas to rigorous debate, but all remember that we're here for the same purpose: to do good work together. Charging the trust battery is part of that work.

Description

37signals is hiring a Senior Product Designer for our Mobile team (iOS and Android). With Basecamp 4 nearly complete, HEY on the rise, and a number of new product ideas in the wings, there's plenty of opportunity to have a significant impact now, and on the next chapter of the company. This is a job where you can really make your mark.

About our Apps

Our iOS apps are written in Swift, our Android apps are written in Kotlin, and both use a hybrid web and native approach to reuse web views across platforms, while leveling up important areas of the mobile apps with native code for full fidelity. We recently open sourced the frameworks that underpin our hybrid approach under the Hotwire umbrella, and Turbo Native is the foundation of our iOS & Android app development.

About the Job

At many companies, mobile design is split into different roles: UX, UI, etc. Additionally, there is a separation of target platforms: Android and iOS. At 37signals, it’s all one role. This means our designers are generalists. Along with having great visual taste and sensibilities, you must be able to work in both Android Studio and Xcode. You're comfortable using Git to make visual changes directly in the app source code, and modifying front-end HTML and CSS (BEM) for mobile web views used by our apps. You'll collaborate with a mobile programmer to bring the feature to life.

Here are some things we’ve worked on recently to give you a sense of what you’ll be doing day-to-day.

  • Manually converted colors from Swift to Color Assets in Xcode
  • Implemented Dark Mode in the Basecamp Android app
  • Designed a Work Can Wait indicator (Notifications OFF) in the Basecamp apps with a way to quickly change your status
  • Modified Calendar/Schedule CSS used by both Android and iOS apps
  • Worked together with a programmer on a technical proof-of-concept for a new feature
  • Designed a new way to refine search results in HEY
  • Fixed inconsistencies between Android and iOS apps
  • Translated the HEY Send Later feature on Web to Android and iOS
  • Built the apps locally on a mobile device to view functional updates. Changed icons, copy, or adjusted designs in Android Studio or Xcode. Pushed updates to GitHub.
  • Designed unique platform specific features that enhance Basecamp and HEY

What To Expect

You can expect a mindful onboarding process with structured ramp-up time. You can expect a team that listens. You can expect to be counted on and the freedom to do your best work. We build our apps, our teams, and our company for the long haul, so you can build your career here if you choose to.

We respect everyone's right to participate in political expression and activism, but avoid having political debates on our internal communication systems. Basecamp as a company also does not weigh in on politics publicly, outside of topics directly related to our business. You should be at peace with both of these stances.

Pay and benefits

37signals pays in the top 10% of the industry, for the matched role and experience, based on San Francisco rates. For this role, the annual salary is 185,488 USD.

Our benefits support a life well-lived away from work. Ample time off and all the resources you need to support you in doing the best work of your career. Here's more on the benefits we offer.

Applicants from outside the US will be offered a contractor role with comparable terms and at the same rate of pay as our US-based employees.

How to apply

Please submit an application that speaks directly to this position. Tell us about yourself, about what you can bring to 37signals, and about 37signals' role in your future. Tell us why you're a designer. Be descriptive, but don’t feel the need to write a novel — 800 words or so should be plenty. Last, be sure to show us your work, and work other people have done that you really admire.

We’re accepting applications until Monday June 20th at 5:00PM US-Central time. There’s no benefit to filing early, so take your time, and forget that generic resume.

We encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply for a job where you can do the best work of your career.

Once the deadline passes, we expect to take a few weeks to review all applications. After that, you can expect 2-3 interviews, all remote, with your future colleagues, on your schedule. We’ll talk through your background, your approach to design, and dive into your professional knowledge. No gotchas or surprises.

After the interviews, the final candidates will be given an at-home design challenge. The exercise is representative of the kind of work we do, and it helps us understand how you’d approach new problems from scratch. We invite no more than 5 candidates to this stage, and those candidates should expect to spend about 3 work days completing the project. You’ll be compensated for your time.

We hope to make an offer in August, with a flexible start date later that month.

Please note that due to the number of applications we receive for open positions, we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the screening process.

This is a demanding application process and significant, long-term career move to consider. We appreciate you giving us that consideration, and we promise to give you our full attention in return. We look forward to hearing from you!
